Speedway Children’s Charities – Texas and Silver Dollar at the Ranch Have Chosen the Following Organizations as 2017 Grant Recipients:
A Wish with Wings knows that health issues make life difficult, especially for young patients. (A 501(c) 3 organization founded by Pat Skaggs in 1982, a Wish with Wings was Texas’ first wish-granting agency.) Donors and volunteers of the organization help bring happy moments to families in need of good news. In more than 30 years, the organization has granted over 1,300 wishes to Texas children fighting life-threatening medical conditions. They think of it as giving wishes wings. The Silver Dollar at the Ranch Event on May 20th, 2017 will aim to grant many wishes.
Founded in 2007, ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship is a PATH Premier Accredited Equine Center located on 14 acres of rolling pasture in Collin County. ManeGait provides weekly therapeutic horsemanship programs to adults and children with physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioral disabilities. Certified instructors lead our programs with the assistance of skilled therapy horses and more than 275 dedicated volunteers each week.
Grant funding for Silver Dollar at the Ranch will directly benefit ManeGait riders who have been diagnosed with pediatric cancer. Through the programs offered by ManeGait, pediatric cancer patients improve their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. The physical benefits of horseback riding are the most obvious and include muscle strength and improved endurance and fitness. Just as important, are the psychological benefits that come from working with horses which include a sense of empowerment and control, things that are often stripped away when undergoing cancer treatment! The ability to have fun while undergoing therapy yields incredible results for our riders and by extension their families.
The Research Program at Mary Crowley Cancer Research addresses the dire need for new drugs for pediatric cancer. Approval of new cancer drugs for children and adolescents is typically an afterthought to those developed for adult cancers, due to the small number of children diagnosed annually compared to adults. Private philanthropy is the key to moving the newest treatments forward for these children.
Ewing’s Sarcoma is a deadly pediatric bone and soft tissue cancer with dismal outcomes. There have been no new treatment options in thirty years. Mary Crowley has two innovative clinical trials open in our clinic and enrolling patients. One trial is testing a personalized immunotherapy that enhances and educates the immune system to recognize and fight the cancer. The second trial is for a targeted therapy that silences the “driver gene” in Ewing’s to stop the cancer growth. Silver Dollar support will help Mary Crowley enroll patients onto these trials. Clinical trials give HOPE to patients today while moving science forward for patients in the future. Mary Crowley is a 501(c)3 organization located in Dallas, Texas and established in 1992 with a mission to advance treatment options for all patients through investigational vaccine, gene and cellular therapies.
